HKR International Limited’s (“HKRI”) corporate volunteer team, HKR Care & Share, joined 20 children from low-income families in Sham Shui Po and Cheung Sha Wan to learn African drumming and make tribal accessories on 26 April 2014 (Saturday).

The African Drum Jamming Workshop 「非」常鼓樂工作坊 was organised by HKR Care & Share in collaboration with Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation for children aged 6 to 12 serviced by the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) Community Centre.

Drumming is a universal language that transcends gender, race and age. It generates positive energy, as well as motivates and strengthens connections between people. During the workshop, the children made their own African accessories and had African face painting with the help of volunteers. After that, Makha Diop, professional percussionist from Africa, and his team taught the children and volunteers the basic techniques of African djembe drumming and everyone experienced the thrilling beats in the drum jam finale. The workshop offered an eye-opening cultural experience for both the volunteers and children, most of whom were new to African drumming.

Through a sustained programme of corporate social responsibility activities, HKRI and all HKR Care & Share volunteers pledged to continue serving the needy in society. They are committed to giving back to the community by playing an active role in volunteer services to show their love and care to those in need.
