HKR International Limited (“HKRI”)’s corporate volunteer team, HKRI Care & Share, partnered with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (“TWGHs”) Wilson T.S. Wang District Elderly Community Centre last year to inaugurate the Foam Bar Football event, an inclusive sport for seniors, in Hong Kong. Continuing our collaboration this year, we have recently expanded the scale of the event and organised the “All-In” Foam Bar Football Play-Off in conjunction with five different charitable organisations' neighbourhood elderly centres*. Nearly 50 seniors participated in this event, coming together to compete on the field and experience the joy of team sports, aiming to encourage them in adopting a regular exercise routine and facilitate their social life.
Foam Bar Football, originating from Japan, offers an exciting gameplay that transcends age and physical limitations, making it immensely popular among seniors. HKRI introduced this sport to Hong Kong with an objective to help seniors break down barriers and physical restrictions, rekindling their passion for physical activity while enhancing their overall well-being. True to its name, Foam Bar Football involves using a bat to "kick" the ball into the opponent's goal. Participants need to react swiftly, constantly monitor the ball's position, and swing the bat, which contribute to improving agility, hand-eye coordination, and cognitive abilities. Moreover, it fosters a sense of competition, unity, and the establishment of positive relationships among teammates.
On the day of the Play-off, the seniors were filled with enthusiasm and showcased their strong determination to win. After warm-up exercises and briefings about the rules and safety precautions, they donned their safety equipment, and the intense matches commenced. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the seniors swung their bats energetically, unable to conceal their enthusiasm. On the green field, their movements were agile, highlighting their lively and dynamic nature. Meanwhile, other seniors on the side-lines enthusiastically discussed the intense and thrilling matches and cheered on the athletes. The competition was closely contested, requiring extra time to determine the winners, and the team from Shatin Rhenish Neighbourhood Elderly Centre was crowned overall champion after a hat trick win.
HKRI Care & Share will continue to collaborate with TWGHs Wilson T.S. Wang District Elderly Community Centre in promoting this sport to other elderly centres, enabling more seniors to participate in these physically and mentally rewarding activities.
*The five neighbourhood elderly centres included Shatin Rhenish Neighbourhood Elderly Centre, Sun Chui Lutheran Centre for the Elderly, International Church of the Foursquare Gospel Lung Hang Church Elderly Centre, New Life Church of Christ Sun Tin Wai Neighbour Elderly Centre, and Caritas Elderly Centre – Shatin.
