In the early 1910’s when Castle Peak Road was built, the addresses along the road were marked in “milestones” to represent the distance from Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier. For instance, Anglers' Beach is at “13 milestone Castle Peak Road” and Cafeteria Old Beach is at “18¾ milestone Castle Peak Road”. Although nowadays the street name and numbers have been standardised, the milestones indicating the distance still exist. 8½ is located right between the 8 and 9 milestones of Castle Peak Road, hence the name “8½”.
