Fourth PRI²DE Creative Camp                          Winners Reveal                     HKR International Joins Hands with     Young Designers to Create a Lifestyle

The fourth "PRI²DE Creative Camp - FLEXhome+ International Interior Design Competition 2023", presented by HKR International Limited (“HKRI”), came to a successful conclusion on 28 Feb. Top 13 finalists selected from an impressive pool of 330 entries from around the world competed for the highest honors and awards at Auberge Discovery Bay Hong Kong. It is a known fact that Hong Kong’s residential space is limited, as such participants were tasked with creating flexible home spaces using a floor plan of a standard 600 ft² unit in Hong Kong. The participants demonstrated boundless creativity and unleashed infinite possibilities, leaving a lasting impression on the judges. In the end, Gavin Leung and Bob Wong took home the Champion with their design "The Beloved Nest", while the group of Bella Wong, Boris Cheung and Celia Cheung, as well as Faheem Ahamed Jamaludeen, won First and Second Runners-up respectively. The Young Design Talent Award for designers under 35 went to the team of Albert Leung, Kwan Long and Cheung Ho Yin.

The distinguished final judging panel consisted of Jackie Tang, Managing Director of HKRI and Fellow Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Steve Leung, internationally-recognised and award-winning architect, interior and product designer; Karr Yip, former Chairman of Hong Kong Designers Association and Founder of ADO; Professor Peter Hasdell, Associate Dean of Academic Programmes in the School of Design from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a registered architect, and an expert in urban studies; and Virginia Lung, who possesses rich experience in judging international competitions and Founder of One Plus Partnership, winner of around 900 international interior design awards.

Additionally, we invited Amy Ip, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Designers Association (“HKDA”); and Kyo Siu, Commercial Director of Home Journal, a Hong Kong interior design magazine; and representatives from various supporting organisations, to join us to celebrate this significant moment.

This year, HKRI collaborated with its strategic partner, the HKDA, to hold this competition. Designers from around the world were invited to submit innovative proposals for the competition theme “flexible and multipurpose living spaces”. Notably, the competition lifted age restrictions, allowing participation from all individuals. Additionally, a special award was introduced to encourage participants under 35. Since its launch in August 2023, the competition attracted submissions from over ten countries and regions, sparking ideas for future home spaces.

The winning design, “The Beloved Nest”, co-created by Gavin Leung and Bob Wong, showcases multifunctional cabinets as a central feature. The cabinets seamlessly integrate entertainment and study spaces while enabling cosy living spaces for a family of four, realising a warm home for three generations.

The 1st Runner-up entry, “FRAME”, is designed by Bella Wong, Boris Cheung and Celia Cheung. Adopting “frames” as the main concept, the design creates different focal points, while building respective areas that foster meaningful connections between individuals. The 2nd Runner-up entry, “Walls on Wheels” designed by Faheem Ahamed Jamaludeen, focuses on opening up home spaces and functionality by means of movable and foldable walls, thereby catering various occasions at home.

The Young Design Talent Award entry “Harmony Haven”, designed by Albert Leung, Kwan Long and Cheung Ho Yin, was inspired by the nature and environment, and emphasises sustainable living by utilising eco-friendly materials in the design.

Jackie Tang, Managing Director of HKRI, stated, "The PRI²DE Creative Camp provides a professional platform for designers to ignite creative inspirations and fosters the development of outstanding talents through themed competitions. At HKRI, we emphasise continuous innovations. The theme of ‘Functional and Multipurpose Living Space’ aligns perfectly with our values – ‘Value the Individual and Cherish Our Environment’ and ‘Think Outside the Box’. We are thrilled to have HKDA as our strategic partner. Their unwavering commitment to advancing the design industry makes our collaboration a formidable alliance. HKRI eagerly anticipates partnering with more industry associations, tertiary institutions and professional organisations to co-create a healthy and unique lifestyle experience in residential spaces."

Amy Ip, Vice Chairman of HKDA, noted, "HKDA has always pursued the integration of design and aesthetics, which aligns with the values of HKRI. Through this collaboration, we can establish a platform for young designers to understand the needs in the commercial scene, equipping them with practical experiences to further develop their designs."

With a track record spanning in the real estate industry for nearly 50 years, HKRI remains committed to creating long-term value for the society. To date, the "PRI²DE Creative Camp" Design Competition has successfully held four editions and received an impressive collection of a total of over 860 design works from around 30 countries and regions.
