HKR International Built Momentum Upon Earth Hour 2022 Initiating “Light OFF Power UP” Employee Engagement Campaign

HKR International (HKRI) and its subsidiaries joined forces and supported WWF’s global movement “Earth Hour” on 26 March 2022 to shine a light on climate change. On top of making a corporate pledge on the WWF website, the Group initiated an internal engagement campaign entitled “Light OFF Power UP”. In light of the “new normal” of work life during COVID-19, coupled with the everincreasing pandemic burnout, it is crucial to take care of our personal wellness. By mobilising employees to turn off their computers and practise meditation during lunchtime, the campaign aimed to reduce energy consumption, promote personal wellness, and turn these green actions into daily practices to cultivate a sustainable lifestyle.

On the day of Earth Hour, HKRI’s commercial, residential and hospitality entities in Hong Kong, the mainland of China and Thailand turned off unnecessary lights for an hour. Both The Sukhothai Shanghai and The Sukhothai Bangkok continued their green tradition by using candles to replace electric lighting in designated public areas, as a gesture to shed light on the importance of environmental protection. As a pioneer of sustainable residential development, Discovery Bay residents have already incorporated Earth Hour into their regular monthly activity.

HKRI endeavours to go the extra mile beyond the Earth Hour initiative and believes that small actions collectively could make a big impact on the planet. During the period from 23 to 27 March, the Group rolled out “Light OFF Power UP” campaign internally to encourage our fellow co-workers to switch off computers during lunchtime and power up themselves by doing meditation for five to ten minutes before resuming work, whether it be in the office or at home. Apart from the reduction of carbon emission, we believe that advocating this simple yet significant act would help boost personal wellness and work productivity for the benefit of employees at large.

“We have been facing unprecedented challenges this year. Notwithstanding, our colleagues continue to work with dedication and perseverance amid the pandemic. Adding mental health elements into this energy-saving campaign, we hope to bring on the concept of personal wellness to our staff, not only for healing the earth but also healing themselves to maintain wellbeing.” says Victor Cha, the Executive Chairman of HKRI. To effectively implement corporate sustainability through the ESG framework, the Group is committed to deploying resources in an agile way for pursuing excellence. This year marks the 45th anniversary of HKRI, the Group strives to collaborate with charities, nonprofit organisations and corporates sharing the same vision and goals to shape a better, brighter future with concerted effort.
