HKRI Care & Share Volunteers Collect Food and Prepare Low-carbon Meal for Singleton Elders

With an aim to understand the problem of food waste in Hong Kong, HKRI Care & Share, HKR International Limited’s (“HKRI”) corporate volunteer team, joined hands with Food Grace to organise a Food Collection Experience and Volunteer Day. The volunteers collected leftover vegetables at a wet market and prepared a low-carbon vegetarian meal for singleton elders.

The day started with a discussion on food waste problem in Hong Kong and waste reduction. After the discussion, the volunteers were split into two groups. One group headed to Tai Yuen Estate Market while the rest of the volunteers prepared the low-carbon meal at the centre. The collected vegetables were then sorted and packed into goodie bags with daily goods and food items for the elders. The elders and volunteers all enjoyed a tasty and healthy meal.

Established in 2009, Food Grace believes that waste reduction can only be achieved by cultivating the virtue of cherishing food in the public and educating them to reduce waste at the source. They collect excessive vegetables and fruits from the markets in Tai Po and Yuen Long and redistribute them to the needy. They also provide low-priced lunch services for unemployed workers.
